Richard Avedon

Avedon

Richard Avedon (May 15, 1923 – October 1, 2004) was an American photographer. An obituary published in The New York Times said that “his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America’s image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century”. He has photographed the best of the best in every field of business. He has photographed the stars of music, film, literature, politics, art, dance, theater, and fashion. He got his start in 1947 in fashion photography, photographing for designers such as Dior. His photographs are some of the most well known photographs in the last 60 years.

lightGIANTS “Friday Night Shoot”

I’ve been doing the Friday night shoots part of the lightGIANTS for about 2 years (with the exception of one or 2 shoots). This time we were shooting a CD cover for a “Belle Époque” Trio. Unfortunately the idea of shooting it all in period costume wasn’t possible so we decided to shoot a high key and a more dramatic lighting style.

NEX Panorama….

Intro

In my opinion one of the coolest function of the Sony NEX range of cameras has to be the sweep panorama. The concept is simple you pan the camera in either a vertical or horizontal live while holding the shutter button down (and in panorama mode). once you have finished “sweeping” the camera stitches all the photos together and creates a panorama.

Pimp my Camera ….

Intro

My Zeiss 85mm lens hood has had a hard life. Its been dropped by a Polish taxi driver, used as a football by some kids at a wedding, broken and re-glued several times. I have though about ordering a new one several times but never could. This week I decided it needed some decorating to hide all the scratches in the black paint…..

Sony Alpha 99 vs Alpha 900

Intro

A few weeks ago I got to play with the A99 at Photokina. I have been using Minolta (and latter Sony) as long as I can remember so the A99 is a development that interested me. And how it compares to my A900….

Jazz Age Beauties

Jazz Age Beauties

“Jazz Age Beauties: The Lost Collection of Ziegfeld Photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston” is a book I stumbled across on Amazon a while back. Its shows the private collection of New York photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston (known as “Cheney” to his friends and associates). Born April 1885 Cheney was best  known for his portraits of Ziegfeld Follies showgirls and actors and actresses of the 1920s and 1930s

Félix Nadar

Nadar

There is a photographer that has fascinated me for years “Félix Nadar”. Félix Nadar was the pseudonym of  ”Gaspard-Félix Tournachon” born in April 1820 in Paris and died in March 1910. Nadar was a photographer, and a friend of the painters, writers, and intellectuals in Paris during the time of Napoleon III. As an early pioneer of portrait photography he developed lighting concepts that are the basis studio work today. Earlier this year we were in Avignon and stumbled across a museum with an exhibit of over 100 of his photos, you can’t imagine how ecstatic I was to actually see his work up close ….

D.I.Y Lighting Project

Intro

A few months ago I suggested building a fake church window out of card and colour gels.  Well we never got around to it but it has been in the back of my head ever since then. Today I wanted to do some thing a bit creative with my son … so we built it

Photokina 2012 Part 1

Intro

Unfortunately I only got to spend 1 day at photograph this year but what a day…. I had several stands on my visit list and managed to get to them all and pick up a few cool toys for the studio at the same time.

Sony and Hasselbald

The big news this year would have to be the Hasselbald Luna. The prototypes that we got to play with are based on the Sony NEX 7, but with custom hand made body. It sits very nicely in the hand (even with my big sausage fingers). It will be custom hand made to order in a variety of finished but at approximately 5000€ its not in my price  category.

JJC MSA-10 ISO Hot Shoe Adapter For Sony Nex Cameras.

Intro and Description

JJC MSA-10 is a hot shoe adapter designed for use with the Sony NEX cameras inbuilt Smart Accessory Terminal. This adapter enable users to attach any wireless trigger system or flash unit onto the SONY NEX. The hotshoe mount is designed to fire your flashes with a radio trigger attached. While it is possible to attach a flash unit directly onto the hotshoe, it is not recommended as the weight of the flash may not be fully supported by the mount. We tested it on a NEX 5 and a NEX C3.
