Madam Eden V. Black

Last Monday night was Betty Pages 70th birthday. So we decided to shoot a small tribute to her and roll in history. Page was “Miss January 1955”, one of the earliest Playmates of the Month. Often referred to as the “Queen of Pinups”, her jet black hair, blue eyes, and trademark bangs have influenced artists for generations.

Rockabella Kat….

I have been having a lot of fun with my 2013 project, unfortunately I’m going away for the next few weeks so I wont have the chance to shoot in the studio. But this week I was shooting with Rockabella Kat as model  and Snow White as guest photographer.

Kat did a fantastic job modelling for the first time she quickly adapted to the new situation and put in a lot of effort.

No Problem Praha….

Last week we were in Prague (Old Town) for a few days, I don’t think the temperature got above -1°c. I intended to shoot mostly monotone (Black and White) for several reasons.

  • The sky was always overcast and non-existent in any colour images.
  • The Prague atmosphere and Monotone fit well together
  • Low light just makes a black and white image moody
  • I constantly shoot colour in the studio and wanted a total change
  • I find that colours can be terribly distracting in some images and can take the focus away from your subject
  • I wanted to shoot based on composition and contrast
  • You can often turn a drab colour shot into a cool black and white.
  • It’s classic and elegant, even romantic and special.

Dirndl…

Servus und Grüß Gott… This weeks Monday night studio shoot based around the Dirndl. A dirndl [ˈdɪʁndl̩] is a type of traditional dress worn in Germany, especially Bavaria  Liechtenstein, Austria, and South Tyrol. To keep things authentic dirndl designer Dianna Jones modelled her own outfits, and Austrian photographer Christian joined me for the shoot.

Lord Vader…..

I’ve been waiting for you, Obi-wan. We meet again at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master

How often do you get a chance to photograph Darth Vader in the studio… I have defiantly started this year off to a great start when it comes to themed photo-shoots

Before there was Photoshop…..

Intro

photo magazine from 1941 with photo manipulation tips

The other day I came across some examples of “Photo manipulation” prior to Photoshop. Image manipulation in the dark room is nothing new but it took a whole lot more patients, skill and time. NO undo or save button. Much has been made over Photoshops ability to distort reality, and perhaps lower the standards for image capture as young photographers assume they can “fix it in post.” However, almost all of these abilities have existed as long as there have been photographs to alter, albeit with a little more manual labour. As people were not as aware of the the possibilities photo manipulation was a powerful tool for both propergander and art alike
