Dirndl…

Servus und Grüß Gott… This weeks Monday night studio shoot based around the Dirndl. A dirndl [ˈdɪʁndl̩] is a type of traditional dress worn in Germany, especially Bavaria  Liechtenstein, Austria, and South Tyrol. To keep things authentic dirndl designer Dianna Jones modelled her own outfits, and Austrian photographer Christian joined me for the shoot.

We started the shoot of with bright colourful backgrounds and lots of light and beer to give thing a cheerful playful look. As the night went on we used several different lighting set ups including a ring light and several different soft boxes. Some how we ended up doing a bit of “Harry Potter” witches and wizards look, but finished the shoot off with a tricolour set up resembling the black, red, and gold of the German flag.

A dirndl consists of a bodice, blouse, full skirt and apron. In popular culture it is sometimes reported that the placement of the knot on the apron is an indicator of the woman’s marital status, with a knot tied on the woman’s left side indicating that she is single, a knot tied on the right meaning that she is married, engaged or otherwise “taken”, a knot tied in the front means that she is a virgin. And a knot tied at the back showing that the woman is either widowed or a waitress/barmaid.

Why is she wearing a pilots helmet and goggles?
The glasses and magic wand photos are funny. It kind of reminded me of Hogwarts 🙂
