Tanja and Sarah

Last week a John a  friend of mine was in town visiting, so I organises a last minute studio shoot. Tanja had only been to the studio once before when I was blogging the lightblaster, so this was a great chance to work together again. She was accompanied by Sarah who I quickly dragged into the shoot and she also was a great help setting up the scarves we used, so a special thanks the the girls.

Godox Light Modifier test

This week I was in the studio testing several different light modifiers from Godox they included the 180° light sphere the snoot and the 3 in 1 beauty dish / gridded softbox. This isn’t a “right or wrong way to use them” blog, I just wanted to document the differences for every one to see. None of these lightmoidiferes are expensive so getting the light setup you want and need should be an easy task.

Bare Bulb flash systems …. Part 3 using them in reality.

Because Godox use a Lumedyne style mount the same as Quantum Q flashes a lot of the light modifying accessories are interchangeable. The may be some minor compatibility issues between some systems but from what I have researched around the net there is a great amount of compatibility between the systems and not only with the modifier mount e.g. using 3rd party trigger for HSS, adding several Godox power packs in to a Q flash to reduce recycle time. Not every accessory will be required and using what you already have is logical.

Bare Bulb flash systems …. Part 2 Accessories

System Accessories

Once you have a bare bulb flash you will eventually want to use some light modifiers: umbrellas, soft boxes etc. There are several light modifiers, cables, triggers, colour gels and other accessories on the market to get you started, but you can also use a lot of existing “Strobist” style kit that you may already have. As I’m use one of the re-banded Godox Witstro systems called Genesis Reporter there will be a natural bias in the information I have as its all based on my experiences.

Studio in a Bag …. Part 1

I have a lot of mobile lighting gear…. I can’t help it, it like a compulsion. Playing with light either in the studio or out and about strobist  style (the term strobist is actually a registered trademark and if you don’t know the strobist website you really should check it out) is something I really enjoy, but it can be hard and expensive to find the exact lighting equipment there is so much of it out there now days. So as I’m heading down to my sisters wedding latter this year in New Zealand I want to put together 1 bag of lighting equipment to take with me. So I want to test a few items and really find a balance between price, quality, portability, compatibility etc

Alice Alabaster

This shoot posed a whole new range of problems….. Miss Alabaster saw a photo of me taken with a smart-phone that had one of those retro style camera apps, e.g “Hipstermatic”, “Retro-camera” etc. And wanted to do a shoot where her styling fitted to an 80’s look and the final images looked like they were faded old photos.

Strobist kit in a bag…

Intro

I actually didn’t intend to “win” this item on E-Bay. It was one of those ahh just bid on it for fun. And I won at half the normal kit price.

I thought it was a cool idea for a “starter kit” (which I don’t actually need, so lets call it a “booster pack”), but I also didn’t want to pay the normal E-Bay full price of 99€. I paid just over 50€ including postage. It contains all the basics a strobist kit would need, and it all packs away in one small carry bag.
