The First ever scanned image: Technically, this is the very first digital photograph

Russell A. Kirsch (born 1929) led a team of colleagues which, between 1947 and 1950, created America’s first internally programmable computer, the Standards Eastern Automatic Computer (SEAC). By 1957 Kirsch and his team had invented a scanner which, using the computing power of SEAC, converted photographs to digital images. This breakthrough created the basis for satellite imaging, CAT scans, bar codes, and desktop publishing.

Walden 3 months old – Scanned in 1957

The first image ever scanned on this machine was a 5 cm square photograph of Kirsch’s then-three-month-old son, Walden. The black and white image had a resolution of 176 pixels on a side. Technically, this is the very first digital photograph – all these years later, digital cameras are only just beginning to have the full capabilities of film cameras.

Using Triggertraps Mobile Part 1 … Basic set-up and Cable Release.

Basic set-up and Cable Release

 Outputs- Camera Setup

The first function available on the triggertrap Mobile is the “Cable Release”. It is the simplest function in the array of options and the best place to start off. And I will also cover some of the basic settings you can customise. Remember to use this set up you will need a smart phone with the app, a triggertrap dongle and the appropriate cable for your camera. But before you start to use the triggertrap you might want to set it up for your shooting style and camera.

Triggertrap Mobile Review ….

Intro

This is one of those cool stories that only the internet could make possible. I meet a few of the guys from Triggertraps at Photokina this year.  There had been a lot of talk about them in on of the Flickr groups I administer so I wanted to check them out. Basically a few guys thought they had a great idea but needed the start up capital. Using Kickstarter they wanted to raise $25,000 (£16,000 / €20,000) to create their first product, Triggertrap v1. But got more than they bargained with an astounding 300% of the target amount, and nearly 900 backers funded them to the tune of $75,000 (£48,000 / €60,000). The item that interested me the most is the Triggertrap Mobile, which launched in May 2012.

Bubble Machine

Intro

One of those spur of the moment E-Bay purchases. I have had an idea in the back of my head for a while. A shoot with my 3 year old daughter. She loves bubbles (well what 3 year old doesn’t) but I didn’t want to spend 90€ on a half decent bubble machine. So I picked up this one for €19.00. I like the idea of it being battery or mains powered so I could theoretically shoot my kids any there with it.

Walimex Beauty Ring Light 50W

Walimex Beauty Ring Light 50W

I picked this up on E-Bay last week as a spontaneous purchase. It cost me about 90€ but usually sells for around 99€ (only a minor saving). I have been looking for a cheap powerful ring light for a wile. I have a powerful ring flash but its minimum setting is to powerful for any narrow D.O.F with out adding an ND filter. I laso wanted something that uses mains power so I don’t have to think about battery packs when I’m in the studio.

I have mixed feelings about Walimex products.it can be very hit and miss with their quality control. We have had large Octo-boxes simply fall off the studio flash…. and that was from the supposedly PRO range. But then their air cushioned large light stand was a great buy and has outlasted even more expensive brands.

NEX Panorama….

Intro

In my opinion one of the coolest function of the Sony NEX range of cameras has to be the sweep panorama. The concept is simple you pan the camera in either a vertical or horizontal live while holding the shutter button down (and in panorama mode). once you have finished “sweeping” the camera stitches all the photos together and creates a panorama.

Sony Alpha 99 vs Alpha 900

Intro

A few weeks ago I got to play with the A99 at Photokina. I have been using Minolta (and latter Sony) as long as I can remember so the A99 is a development that interested me. And how it compares to my A900….
