Karlsruhe 1932 … Part 1

Recently we were at “my Wife’s, Uncle’s, Partner’s birthday”. During dinner she remarked “Scott I have something for you”…. My ears picked up and was curious as to what she had. It turns out she was cleaning out her cupboards and found a box of 100 old glass negatives of Karlsruhe (the city in Germany where we live). The photos were taken by her long dead husbands farther. i.e my Wife’s, Uncle’s, Partner’s, ex- Farther in-law.

Pixel King for Sony Part 1

Last Easter John came to visit and shoot in the part with us. The saberproject were training and we went along to shoot them. As always John had some new toys to show me (he suffers from G.A.S, gear acquisition syndrome) and always tempts me with his evil new purchase...PIXEL KING for Sony. Now I’m not a big fan of TTL flash so then he told me hay try these triggers with TTL support I was like “Jeap ok TTL blaa blaa blaa”. I was wrong its actually a cool thing to have especially HSS support. .

Triggertrap Mobile Review ….

Intro

This is one of those cool stories that only the internet could make possible. I meet a few of the guys from Triggertraps at Photokina this year.  There had been a lot of talk about them in on of the Flickr groups I administer so I wanted to check them out. Basically a few guys thought they had a great idea but needed the start up capital. Using Kickstarter they wanted to raise $25,000 (£16,000 / €20,000) to create their first product, Triggertrap v1. But got more than they bargained with an astounding 300% of the target amount, and nearly 900 backers funded them to the tune of $75,000 (£48,000 / €60,000). The item that interested me the most is the Triggertrap Mobile, which launched in May 2012.

Walimex Beauty Ring Light 50W

Walimex Beauty Ring Light 50W

I picked this up on E-Bay last week as a spontaneous purchase. It cost me about 90€ but usually sells for around 99€ (only a minor saving). I have been looking for a cheap powerful ring light for a wile. I have a powerful ring flash but its minimum setting is to powerful for any narrow D.O.F with out adding an ND filter. I laso wanted something that uses mains power so I don’t have to think about battery packs when I’m in the studio.

I have mixed feelings about Walimex products.it can be very hit and miss with their quality control. We have had large Octo-boxes simply fall off the studio flash…. and that was from the supposedly PRO range. But then their air cushioned large light stand was a great buy and has outlasted even more expensive brands.

NEX Panorama….

Intro

In my opinion one of the coolest function of the Sony NEX range of cameras has to be the sweep panorama. The concept is simple you pan the camera in either a vertical or horizontal live while holding the shutter button down (and in panorama mode). once you have finished “sweeping” the camera stitches all the photos together and creates a panorama.

Sony Alpha 99 vs Alpha 900

Intro

A few weeks ago I got to play with the A99 at Photokina. I have been using Minolta (and latter Sony) as long as I can remember so the A99 is a development that interested me. And how it compares to my A900….

Photokina 2012 Part 1

Intro

Unfortunately I only got to spend 1 day at photograph this year but what a day…. I had several stands on my visit list and managed to get to them all and pick up a few cool toys for the studio at the same time.

Sony and Hasselbald

The big news this year would have to be the Hasselbald Luna. The prototypes that we got to play with are based on the Sony NEX 7, but with custom hand made body. It sits very nicely in the hand (even with my big sausage fingers). It will be custom hand made to order in a variety of finished but at approximately 5000€ its not in my price  category.

JJC MSA-10 ISO Hot Shoe Adapter For Sony Nex Cameras.

Intro and Description

JJC MSA-10 is a hot shoe adapter designed for use with the Sony NEX cameras inbuilt Smart Accessory Terminal. This adapter enable users to attach any wireless trigger system or flash unit onto the SONY NEX. The hotshoe mount is designed to fire your flashes with a radio trigger attached. While it is possible to attach a flash unit directly onto the hotshoe, it is not recommended as the weight of the flash may not be fully supported by the mount. We tested it on a NEX 5 and a NEX C3.
