Natascha aka “The girl with the pearl earing”

Last week I was in the studio with Natascha to finally start a project I have wanted to do for a long long time. To re shoot classic painted portraits mostly from the Dutch and Flemish golden age of painting. My First attempt was to shoot the girl with the pear earring by Johannes Vermeer.

Elena Sophie

This week I was in the studio with Elena Sophie and Thorsten as I wanted to have some new material to blog. Most the stuff I have been shooting over the last 6 months has either been private shoots or product shoots, so my own personal ranting and raving (aka blog) was neglected over this period. My concept for the shoot was a minimalist lighting look with one 60x80cm soft-box in close and if needed 1 other light source.

Photokina …. Part II

After finally finding my way out of the labyrinth that was “made in china world” I set of to find Ben and Teymur, all I knew was that they were somewhere… And as fate would have it as I was on the going down escalator there they were passing by on the opposite escalator going up  …

Having a chance to catch up with the guys was great, they were there working for Manfrotto and dragged me along with them to the RED camera stand which seem like a good idea at the time….

My new (old) IR A100…..

I have been sidetracked from blogging over the last few months. But I should have more time to get back into it for a while again…..

I spent August back in New Zealand, and we had a great time. While I was the I picked up a bag of Sony Alpha gear from a Pawn brokers (Cash converters). I was actually only after 1 lens in the bag but it was cheap and they wouldn’t split it up. It included several lenses and a Sony Alpha 100 (in very good condition) extra batteries, charger, CF cards etc so I couldn’t lose on the deal. My son was happy he though he was going to get the A100 but instead I took it to Phototronics (An authorises Sony repair centre) and had them fit a 720nm IF filter.

Film Noir shoot with Thorsten ….

A few weeks ago Thorsten suggested we do shoot in the style of a 1940’s black and white film. The term film noir, French for “black film”, first applied to Hollywood films by French critic Nino Frank in 1946, but the name took until the 1970s to catch on in the American cinema. Whether film noir qualifies as a distinct genre is a matter of ongoing debate among scholars.

Chiaroscuro (Italian for light-dark) in art is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition.   As a big fan of painters like Caravaggio, Velázquez, Vermeer and Rembrandt I used the concept of Chiaroscuro for lighting this project.

DOME : Artist catalouge shoot (making of)

Christian (aka Dome) is an artist who has a studio is next door to the lightGIANTS studio so we run into each other all the time. A few weeks back we organises to shoot  a large part of his current work. As this shoot was something completely different my normal portrait shoots  I thought it would be interesting to post mostly “making of” style photos so you can see the process and thought that went into the shoot. To see the finished images please visit Christian (aka Dome) website www.domeone.de or visit him on Facebook  www.facebook.com/dome.streetart
